The two main Budapest Christmas market venues, the Advent Basilica on St Stephen's Square and the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas on Vörösmarty Square, usually open in mid-November and run until the New Year. Their official 2026 dates had not been published at the time of writing; in 2025 both opened on 14 November, with Vörösmarty closing on 31 December and the Basilica on 1 January. Advent in Óbuda is confirmed to open on 27 November 2026.
This guide covers the 6 best ways to enjoy a Budapest Christmas market trip, from the light shows on the Basilica facade to the neighbourhood market in Óbuda and an evening on the ice in City Park. Each entry has the address, the nearest metro or tram stop and a Pro Tip.
The order starts in District V, where the Basilica and Vörösmarty Square are a short walk apart. It then heads into the Jewish Quarter for Gozsdu Court, out to City Park for skating, north to Óbuda, and finishes on the Danube.

1Advent Basilica on St Stephen's Square - Europe's Award-Winning Market

The Advent Basilica market in front of St Stephen's Basilica has repeatedly been voted the best Christmas market in Europe in public polls run by European Best Destinations, including the title of best European Christmas market of all time in 2024. It is smaller and more carefully curated than Vörösmarty Square, with around a hundred Hungarian craft exhibitors.
The highlight is the light show projected onto the facade of the Basilica after dark, with a giant Christmas tree in front of the steps and a small ice rink for children around it. The food stalls serve Hungarian specialities such as lángos, stuffed cabbage and chimney cake.
In 2025 the market ran from 14 November to 1 January. Check the official Advent Basilica website for confirmed 2026 dates.
2Vörösmarty Classic Xmas - The Original Budapest Christmas Market

The Christmas market on Vörösmarty Square is the oldest Budapest Christmas market, held here since 1998. It is large and lively, with wooden stalls selling Hungarian crafts such as embroidered textiles, ceramics, leather goods and wooden toys, along with a wide choice of hot food and drink.
A stage hosts folk music and dance, and the Gerbeaud café, a Budapest institution since the 19th century, overlooks the square. Its facade is often decorated as a giant Advent calendar during the season.
In 2025 the market ran from 14 November to 31 December. Prices for food and drink are higher than in neighbourhood markets, and the square is packed on Friday and Saturday evenings.
3Gozsdu Christmas Market - Festive Stalls in the Jewish Quarter

The Gozsdu Christmas Market sets up in Gozsdu Court, a passage of interconnected courtyards running between Király utca and Dob utca in the Jewish Quarter. The 2026 market has been announced for 4 to 23 December, open daily.
The courtyards are lined with bars and restaurants, and the market adds stalls selling local design, crafts and gifts, with a younger, more creative feel than the big squares. It is a good stop on an evening in District VII, Budapest's nightlife district, home to the famous ruin bars.
The Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Europe, is a short walk away.

4City Park Ice Rink - Skating Beside Vajdahunyad Castle

The City Park Ice Rink (Városligeti Műjégpálya) is one of the largest and oldest open-air ice rinks in Europe, set on the lake in City Park beside the fairy-tale Vajdahunyad Castle. Skating here has been a Budapest winter tradition since the 19th century.
The rink usually opens in late November or December, depending on the weather, and runs until late winter. Skates can be hired on site, and the historic rink building, with its domed pavilion, adds to the atmosphere.
Heroes' Square, with its Millennium Monument, is at the entrance to the park, and the Széchenyi Baths are a short walk away, so the three combine easily.
5Advent in Óbuda - The Locals' Favourite Market

Advent in Óbuda (Advent Óbudán) takes place on Fő tér, the Baroque main square of Óbuda, the oldest part of Budapest. It is the Budapest Christmas market that many locals prefer, with lower prices, better food and far fewer tourists than the central markets. The 2026 market is confirmed to open on 27 November.
The square is ringed by old buildings, and the market has a small-town feel, with stalls selling Hungarian food, crafts and drinks, and a stage for concerts. It is a good place to try traditional dishes such as stuffed cabbage and roast pork at reasonable prices.
Óbuda is easy to reach on the H5 suburban railway from Batthyány tér.
6Christmas Cruise on the Danube - The City Lights from the River

A Christmas cruise on the Danube is one of the best ways to see Budapest's lit-up landmarks, including the Parliament, Buda Castle, the Chain Bridge and Fisherman's Bastion. Several operators run evening cruises during the festive season, some with mulled wine and Christmas music on board.
Cruises usually last about an hour and leave from piers along the Pest embankment near Vigadó tér and the Parliament. In 2025, some festive cruises ran from late November into early January; check operators' websites for 2026 schedules.
Tram 2, which runs along the Pest bank, is itself often named one of the most scenic tram routes in Europe, and it passes the main piers.
