The main Warsaw Christmas market stretches through the rebuilt Old Town, from Castle Square along the medieval defensive walls to the Barbican and on to the Old Town Market Square. Official 2026 dates had not been announced at the time of writing; in 2025 the Old Town market ran from 21 November 2025 to 6 January 2026, and some listings expect similar dates for 2026. Entry is free.
Warsaw is also known for its Christmas illuminations, which stretch for around 20 km along the Royal Route and the city's main streets. This guide covers the 6 best ways to enjoy a Warsaw Christmas market trip, from the Old Town and its ice rink to the market in front of the Palace of Culture and Science and the Royal Garden of Light at Wilanów. Each entry has the address, the nearest metro, tram or bus stop and a Pro Tip. Where 2026 details had not been announced, we give last year's dates.
The order starts at Castle Square, explores the Old Town, climbs St Anne's Church tower, follows the Royal Route lights, heads to Plac Defilad and finishes at Wilanów Palace.
1Old Town Christmas Market - From Castle Square to the Barbican

The Warsaw Christmas market begins on Castle Square, beneath the Royal Castle and Sigismund's Column, and wooden huts line ul. Podwale and the old defensive walls all the way to the Barbican, a 16th-century fortified gateway. The whole Old Town, rebuilt after its destruction in the Second World War and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is decorated with thousands of lights.
The 2026 dates had not been announced at the time of writing. In 2025, the Old Town market ran from 21 November 2025 to 6 January 2026, and entry was free.
Stalls sell Christmas decorations, handicrafts, toys and Polish food, from oscypek smoked cheese and kiełbasa sausages to pierogi, along with grzaniec (mulled wine) and mead.
Pro Tip: Start at Castle Square at dusk, when the Royal Castle and the giant Christmas tree are lit up, then follow the stalls along the city walls to the Barbican.
2Old Town Market Square Ice Rink - Skating Around the Mermaid

The Old Town Market Square, surrounded by colourful rebuilt merchant houses, becomes the heart of the Christmas season with an ice rink set up around the statue of the Warsaw Mermaid, the city's symbol. Market stalls surround the rink, selling food, drinks and gifts.
In recent years, the rink has been open daily during the holiday season, and skates can be hired on site. The illuminated facades of the square make it one of the most picturesque places to skate in Poland.
The 2026 rink dates had not been confirmed at the time of writing; it usually opens alongside the Old Town Christmas market in late November.
Pro Tip: Skate in the early afternoon on a weekday for the quietest ice, then warm up in one of the cafés on the square with a hot chocolate or grzaniec.
3St Anne's Church Tower - The Best View of the Old Town

The bell tower of St Anne's Church, at the start of the Royal Route next to Castle Square, has a viewing terrace with one of the best views of the Warsaw Christmas market and the illuminated Old Town. From the top, you can see the Royal Castle, Castle Square and the roofs of the Old Town.
The climb involves around 150 steps, and entry is ticketed. The church itself, with its rich Baroque interior, survived the Second World War largely intact and is worth a look.
The view is especially magical in the early evening, when the Christmas lights come on across the square below.
Pro Tip: Climb the tower just after sunset, which is around 3.25pm in mid-December, to see Castle Square and the Christmas tree lit up. Check opening hours in advance, as they are shorter in winter.
4Royal Route Christmas Illuminations - 20 km of Lights

Warsaw's Christmas illuminations are among the largest in Europe, covering around 20 km of streets, and the most spectacular stretch runs along the Royal Route. From Castle Square, Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat are lined with light installations, illuminated trees and decorations past palaces, churches and the University of Warsaw.
The lights usually stay up from late November until early January or later, and walking the Royal Route is free. Cafés and restaurants line the street, making it easy to stop for a warming drink.
The route continues south towards Łazienki Park and on to Wilanów, so you can follow the lights across much of the city.
Pro Tip: Walk the Royal Route from Castle Square to Nowy Świat in the early evening, then take the M2 metro back. Look out for the illuminated installations outside the Presidential Palace.
5Plac Defilad Christmas Market - By the Palace of Culture

In front of the Palace of Culture and Science, the towering Stalin-era skyscraper that dominates Warsaw's skyline, a newer Christmas market has set up on Plac Defilad. It offers food, drinks, gifts and entertainment in a modern setting, close to the main railway station.
In the 2025 season, the market ran from 28 November 2025 to 1 January 2026, with features such as an outdoor cinema under the Christmas tree. The 2026 dates had not been announced at the time of writing.
From the Palace of Culture's 30th-floor viewing terrace, visitors can see the city lights spread out below. It is the most modern Warsaw Christmas market on this list.
Pro Tip: Combine the market with a trip to the Palace of Culture's viewing terrace after dark for panoramic views over Warsaw's Christmas lights.
6Wilanów Royal Garden of Light - Illuminated Palace Gardens

The Royal Garden of Light at Wilanów Palace, the Baroque summer residence of King John III Sobieski, is one of Warsaw's most beloved winter traditions. The palace gardens are filled with thousands of lights and illuminated installations, creating a magical evening walk.
The illuminations usually open in the autumn and run through the winter, and entry is ticketed. Check the Wilanów Palace website for 2026 dates, opening hours and prices before you go.
The palace is one of Poland's most important Baroque monuments, and its facade looks especially striking lit up on a winter evening. It is a perfect add-on to a Warsaw Christmas market trip.
Pro Tip: Visit on a weekday evening to avoid the weekend crowds, and buy your ticket online in advance. Allow around 40 minutes each way by bus from the city centre.
