Christmas in Madeira combines festive traditions with winter sunshine, as December temperatures in Funchal often reach the high teens. The island's capital switches on its famous Christmas lights on 1 December, with the illuminations and the Christmas market on Avenida Arriaga running until 10 January 2027, according to Madeira's official 2026 to 2028 events calendar, which may change. Entry to the market is free.
The season peaks with the Noite do Mercado (Market Night) on 23 December, when thousands gather at Funchal's farmers' market, and ends with one of the world's most spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks displays. 1Funchal Christmas Lights - The Illuminated Amphitheatre

Funchal's Christmas lights are among the most impressive in Portugal, with illuminations covering the city centre and the hillsides of the natural amphitheatre around the bay. Streets, squares and gardens are decorated with light installations, and the whole city glows at night.
The lights are switched on on 1 December and stay on until 10 January 2027, according to Madeira's official events calendar. In 2025, the switch-on ceremony took place at 7pm in Praça do Povo, on the waterfront, followed by a concert.
The best way to see the lights is on foot, walking from the waterfront along Avenida Arriaga and up through the old town.
2Christmas Market on Avenida Arriaga - Madeiran Produce and Shows

Funchal's Christmas market lines Avenida Arriaga, the city's main avenue, with stalls selling local produce, Madeira wine, cane honey, crafts and festive treats, along with daily shows. It runs from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, according to the official events calendar.
Look out for bolo de mel, Madeira's traditional honey cake made with sugar cane molasses, and poncha, the island's famous drink of sugar cane rum, honey and lemon. Madeira embroidery, a centuries-old craft, makes an elegant gift.
The avenue is lined with jacaranda trees, gardens and historic buildings, including the Sé Cathedral nearby. It is the heart of Christmas in Madeira.
3Missas do Parto - Dawn Masses before Christmas

The Missas do Parto are a uniquely Madeiran tradition: a series of dawn masses held in churches across the island in the nine days before Christmas, from 16 to 24 December. After each mass, locals gather outside the church to sing, play traditional music and share food and drink.
In Funchal, the masses at the Sé Cathedral attract large crowds, and the celebrations afterwards are lively, with poncha, sandwiches and festive songs. In 2025, the mass at the cathedral began at 7.30am.
The tradition gives visitors a chance to experience a local Christmas custom that has been practised for generations.

4Noite do Mercado - Market Night on 23 December

The Noite do Mercado (Market Night), held every year on 23 December, is the highlight of Christmas in Madeira for many locals. People from across the island come to Funchal's Mercado dos Lavradores, the historic farmers' market, to do their Christmas shopping and celebrate late into the night.
The market and surrounding streets fill with music, stalls and food, including sandwiches of carne de vinha d'alhos (pork marinated in wine and garlic), a Madeiran Christmas speciality. The 2026 Market Night takes place on 23 December, according to Visit Portugal.
Smaller Market Nights are held in other towns across the island in the days before. It is the most authentic way to experience Christmas in Madeira.
5New Year's Eve Fireworks - A World-Famous Display

Madeira's New Year's Eve fireworks over Funchal Bay are among the most famous in the world and have held a Guinness World Record. Fireworks are launched from dozens of points around the city's amphitheatre, the waterfront and platforms at sea, lighting up the whole bay at midnight.
For the 2026 to 2027 season, the regional government has set 59 firing points, including 27 on the amphitheatre and 25 along the waterfront, according to official information. Cruise ships fill the harbour to watch the display.
Hotels and restaurants with bay views book up months in advance, so plan early if you want to see the fireworks.
